MMA fighters are judged by fans on the basis of how good they are, plus a harder-to-define emotional connection. For male fighters there are beloved princes like GSP and beloved vagabonds like the Diaz brothers. Female fighters suffer the additional filter of looks.
Outside of three goofy UGers who compare fighter ab definition, few fans spend much time comparing say Bigfoot to the Warmaster in the looks department. For women, looks comparisons are often a central subject of fan interest.
Female fighters range from models like Paige VanZant, to, well, non-models. Like most fighters, Ediane Gomes isn’t a model.
Gomes grew up hard. She was given away by her parents in Brazil, and was a homeless drug addict. Vale Tudo legend Macaco saw potential in her and began to teach Gomes mixed martial arts. She had an opportunity to fight a man, bareknuckle, and won.
MMA was hard, too. She won five in a row, and then lost to future UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Won one, and then lost to future women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Won four more, and now has lost back to back to Invicta FC bantamweight champion Tonya Evinger, and most recently to Raquel Pa’aluhi.
She thanks Macaco for saving her life, but she has been buoyed too by a sense of humor, as evidenced by the latest image on her social network.

Gomes has come now as far as has anyone in mixed martial arts. She trains at ATT, is managed by Alex Davis, married a Brazilian who grew up in America, and even reconciled as much as a human being can with the parents who gave her away.
And she has a lot of fans, inlcuding this one.
