Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar has had two chances at the featherweight title, both of those opportunities against Jose Aldo. Edgar lost to Aldo by decision at UFC 156 back in 2013 and again by decision at UFC 200 in 2016.

With Aldo regaining the title in their second bout after Conor McGregor vacated the title, it would have been a hard sell to grant Edgar a third fight having lost the first two. However, as fate would have it, Aldo lost the title in his next bout to Hawaiian Max Hollaway and Edgar has been selected to be Hollaway’s first title defense:

A featherweight title fight between defending champion Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar will headline UFC 218 on Dec. 2 in Detroit.

UFC officials confirmed the 145-pound championship fight to ESPN on Tuesday. The pay-per-view event will take place inside Little Caesars Arena.

Holloway (18-3) will seek his first UFC title defense and 12th consecutive win. The 25-year-old Hawaiian claimed the title by knocking out all-time great Jose Aldo in the third round at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro.
