Eddie Alvarez and Gil Melendez were long two of the top fighters not signed with the UFC, and both were in the lightweight division. Now both are in the UFC, and have begun trash talking, although each have fights scheduled. Melendez fights Anthony Pettis at the conclusion of TUF 20, where the pair appear as opposing coaches. Alvarez makes his UFC debut vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 178 on Sept. 27.

“I feel he’s fallen off the past couple years, to be honest,” said Melendez recently, as transcribed by Dave Doyle. “Maybe our paths will cross now. And I’m so not scared at all if that’s the case.”

Alvarez did not turn the other cheek. Duh.

“Oh, is that what he thinks?” Alvarez told MMAFighting.com. “Tell you what, I think Diego Sanchez must have really landed good with those uppercuts when they fought last year, if that’s the case. He must still be feeling them.”

“I hope Melendez beats Pettis. Nothing against Pettis, but I want Melendez to win that fight. I want to beat Donald and then finally get my hands on Melendez with the title up for grabs. Best of all worlds.”

So what do you think UG? If Alvarez and Melendez fight, who wins?
