The last remaining competitor from season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter, Diego Sanchez, dropped to 145 with the hopes of fighting Conor McGregor. That fight did not materialize, but he lost to Ricardo Lamas via Unanimous Decision at The Ultimate Fighter Latin America 2 Finale: Magny vs. Gastelum on November 21, 2015 in Monterrey, Mexico.
Sanchez struggled mightily to make weight for the Lamas fight, and the cut left him clearly a worse and less effective fighter. He has however joined Kenny Florian as the only two fighters for compete in four different weight classes in the UFC.
The use of an IV to rehydrate intravenously was banned, amidst some controversy, under the UFC’s new anti-doping program administered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Given the steps being taken in the sport to combat extreme cutting, the move back to lightweight seems entirely reasonable.
