Kenny Florian wages two fights

With the biggest fight of his career less than two months away, Kenny Florian is trying to keep his focus on his opponent, UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn. But Diego Sanchez is making that difficult.

When they fought on the Season 1 finale of The Ultimate Fighter in 2005, Sanchez TKO’d Florian in the first round, and he clearly believes he’s a more worthy No. 1 lightweight contender and isn’t afraid to pronounce it.

One of the reasons for me dropping to 155 (pounds) was the fact that Kenny Florian is coming up on his second title shot, and this is a guy that I walked through four years ago, Sanchez said on a recent UFC conference call. And everybody thinks that, ’Yeah, we’ve both evolved, we’ve both changed, we’re both different fighters, we’ve both improved a lot.’ But the fact is that I walked through him and it wasn’t even a fight, and (Florian) is the No. 1 contender. So in my mind, I am the No. 1 contender right now.

Though such talk is a potential distraction, Florian is actually glad to hear it. The Dover native said that once he’s done with Penn on Aug. 8 in Philadelphia, he’ll welcome a rematch with Sanchez.
