ONE flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson has clapped back at UFC bantamweight king Aljamain Sterling.
During a recent appearance on “The MMA Hour” podcast, “Mighty Mouse” was alerted to Sterling’s comments that the flyweight legend was “too little” and that “Father Time has passed him a little” when discussing a hypothetical matchup between the pair.
Johnson didn’t take the jab lying down and invited the New York native to meet him for a friendly contest.
“Let’s play spar. Come spar, I would love to grapple you, I would love to just move and see how you do your thing,” he said.
ONE’s flyweight titleholder has shown no signs of slowing down lately, with his epic five-round victory over longtime rival Adriano Moraes in the ONE Fight Night 10 headliner proving that there is still plenty of gas left in the tank.
The 37-year-old used a masterful clinch game to shut down Moraes and take a 2-1 victory in the rivalry between the pair.
Johnson stated that the outcome would be similar if he were to share the mats with Sterling.
“I feel his weakness is he has no clinch game. I would eat his ass up for breakfast in the clinch game. I feel like, rhythm-wise, I move way better than he does on the feet,” he said.
“I just feel like I’d eat him alive in the clinch.”
While a Johnson-Sterling battle is only likely to take place within the confines of a gym, “Mighty Mouse” is still awaiting his next assignment with ONE Championship.
His win over Moraes in May took his tally to six since joining the world’s largest martial arts organization in 2019, following a decorated run in North America.
Johnson hinted at retirement immediately after his victory at ONE’s historic U.S. debut event. On “The MMA Hour,” the American superstar noted that a decision still hasn’t been made and that he has simply been enjoying some time away with his family while he contemplates his next move.
