DC on the merits of a rematch for DJ, and for Miocic
Daniel Cormier: If Demetrious Johnson doesn’t get a rematch, there is no hope for any of us in the entire world, because that means that nothing you could ever do will warrant getting an immediate title shot.”

When Henry Cejudo took a controversial Split Decision over Demetrious Johnson in the co-main event of UFC 227, there was a near-universal feeling that Johnson deserved an immediate rematch. However, immediately upon winning, Cejudo called out the winner of the T.J. Dillashaw vs. Cody Garbrandt main event rematch. When Dillashaw won, he said he, too, was game for the superfight.
Champ champ and commentator Daniel Cormier understands both sides. Cormier is a former captain of the US Olympic wrestling team, and Cejudo is a former Olympic gold medalist. But at the same time, fair is fair.
I love Henry and I love his idea that he wants to be a two-weight champ, said Cormier, as transcribed by Alexander K. Lee for MMA Fighting. Cool thing to do now. But if anybody deserves a rematch, it’s Demetrious Johnson. Come on, he lost a split decision after 11 title defenses. If Demetrious Johnson doesn’t get a rematch, there is no hope for any of us in the entire world, because that means that nothing you could ever do will warrant getting an immediate title shot.
Rogan then asked Cormier about Stipe Miocic too deserving a rematch, as he held the UFC heavyweight record for title defenses, with three. Cormier plans to defend in a money fight vs. Brock Lesnar.
[Miocic] should, but he went three. Three is a lot different than 11, argued Cormier. And also, if Brock Lesnar was staring at Stipe, that would happen, but I’ll tell you this right now, I’ll tell you this on record: If Brock Lesnar doesn’t make it to the fight for any reason, I’ll fight Stipe again. That is not a problem.
There is no reason I wouldn’t fight Stipe. I’m only fighting Brock because I’m fighting Brock. But if he doesn’t make it, I’ll fight Stipe again. There you go.
