At Bellator 142, in one night Phil Davis tapped out former league light heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton, and knocked out UFC vet Francis Carmont?, earning the #1 contender spot. Unfortunately, Bellator light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary has been too injured to defend his title, so Davis took a fight with Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal at Bellator 154 on Saturday. In Lawal’s last fights, he beat three opponents across two days to win the Rizin Heavyweight Grand Prix.

“All I know is, by winning Dynamite 1 I secured my No. 1 contender spot and the champion was unable to continue,” said Davis on The MMA Circus, as transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMA Fighting. “He wasn’t able to continue on with the fight so we had to explore some other options. That’s how Mo’s name got tossed into the hat.”

“I think he is good all the way around. I just think I’m better. It’s as simple as that. He’s good. He’s really good. But I’m just better… Wherever Mo decides to make his mistake, that’s where I’ll capitalize on it. If that’s standing, if that involves a takedown, if it’s in the clinch, whatever. I’ll take him down, I’ll submit him, I’ll beat him up standing. Whatever he wants. I’m an accommodating guy. I like to accommodate people any way I possibly can.”

“I know that this is the fight that the fans want to see. This is really, this is for the fans. I’m gonna beat Mo and then I’m gonna fight for the title. Whoever is still around can fight me and then I’ll defend the title against them. That’s how I feel about it. It doesn’t matter to me. Either way I was gonna end up fighting Mo – either for a title defense or for right now – it doesn’t matter to me. I’m gonna win either time.”

“I think [McGeary] knows who is next. I think he’s trembling in fear right now. He probably wet his pants just hearing this interview.”
