When UFC President Dana White announced today that it was Lyoto Machida, and not as previously falsely reported Rashad Evans that would fight Jon Jones for the title at UFC 140 in December, chatter arose that Machida was not deserving of a title shot.
SB Nations Jonathan Snowden laid out the argument.
Does the former champion deserve a shot? No.
Machida is an Octagon wizard. His fighting style, built on elusive footwork, perfectly timed punches, and uncanny takedown defense, is one we’ve never seen duplicated. In a world of homogenous style and technique, he’s a breath of fresh air. But he’s not a title contender.
Don’t get me wrong. He’s at that level. His ability is unquestioned. It’s his results that give me pause.
Prior to kicking 48 years old Randy Couture’s face offl, Machida had lost consecutive fights. He was outboxed by Rampage Jackson and outhustled by Mauricio Rua. Simply put, Machida hasn’t earned a title shot.
Credibility is key – and right now Machida is not a credible title challenger.
Dana White responded to the charges via twitter.
rashad hurt dickhead. Evans is Hurt, Hendo is fighting shogun and Davis is hurt. U have to be a fuckin moron not to love machida vs jones.
