UFC president Dana White wants Nelson to lose the belly. Nelson feels he doesn’t have to, because he has fought top competition for years, belly and all. While Nelson did win TUF 10, and is at heavyweight, not the deepest roster in the UFC, he is coming off back to back losses, which ordinarily can mean a cut by the UFC. Immediately after his last loss to Frank Mir at UFC 130. Nelson was again making jokes about the belly. Dana was not amused..
I said, ‘The fat thing was funny for a minute. It’s not funny anymore’. The thing with Roy is, Roy feels like he’s an athlete that can perform. He says, ‘If you look at my entire career, I’ve performed at this weight.’ White recalled of their meeting last week.
There’s talks of him being sick the week before the fight. I don’t not believe him. I guess he had walking pneumonia, but Frank Mir did, too. Frank Mir was sick that week, too.
It is hard to talk to a guy that has performed at the level he has with that weight. He felt like he had one bad fight and everybody jumped on him. He said, ‘I’ve performed well at this weight. I’m a human being. I got sick. I still fought, and my cardio was horrible that night. I was dying.’
When you get into these big fights with guys that mean something and you don’t win. Maybe you need to change something up, says White.
While no overt threats have been made – at least publicly – you can be sure Nelson will be getting nowhere near a title shot until he looks like the kind of fighter the UFC wants to market.
