Cris Cyborg Sent the following statement to the MMAprime.tv reporter Aaron Tru recently. The former 145lbs StrikeForce Champion answers questions about facing Ronda Rousey, her weight, and insists that Rousey is merely trying to delude the fans by acting as if she could defeat her.
I get many questions about Rhonda Rousey, and I would like to set the record straight for the last time, as I do not consider her much personally, much less as a fighter.
She claims she is the Champion and openly challenges me to fight at 135lbs. (She competed in the Beijing Olympics at 70kg/154lbs, and fought at 145lbs in MMA till she learned she would have to fight me, and then dropped to 135lbs.) Which I find laughable. I have never fought below 145lbs, and I am considered the pound for pond top women fighter in the WORLD! I have yet to lose a fight while holding the Strikeforce 145lbs title. My last fight was considered a no contest, but that has NOT changed the fact that I AM the women’s 145lbs CHAMPION.
There really is NOT a safe way for me to cut to 135lbs, not without hurting myself physically. (I am less than 8% body fat at 145lbs.) And my cardiologist and physician have advised me that to make such a drastic reduction in weight could have permanent effects in my long term health. And I will not endanger my health to satisfy the rantings of a spoiled little girl who has yet to prove that she can truly compete at my level, at a weight she has not only fought at before but has been awarded an Olympic medal!
So to put this issue to rest, if Rhonda is the future of WMMA, and is the Champion that she envisions….you know where I am, and I am more than willing to give you an opportunity to test me. I WILL fight you at 145lbs, (you know…the weight that you started at), and then you can have 2 belts, and prove to everyone that you are indeed a Champion.
If not, stay at 135lbs and continue to delude yourself and your fans that you can beat me. Your really not worth my time otherwise. I will do all of my talking in the ring, until then your really not worth my breath.

In a November interview with Tatame, Santos said a drop to 135 was not impossible.
Eduardo Ferreira: There two divisions and they want to unify it to a single female division. In that case you’d have to lose a lot of weight. How do you see it?
Cris Cyborg: Actually there’re still two weight divisions: 135lbs and 145lbs. It’s already hard for me to drop to 145lbs, I gotta work a lot and they’re thinking about one division only, they asked me if I could do it. I can try, it’s not impossible. Let’s see… I guess that, in the future, there’ll be some news.
EF: It’d be good for you to have more opponents to fight against, right?
CC: It’ll be hard because I got a lot of weight to lose, but it’d be good because I could fight more. I guess it’s important to keep active, it’s my job, so I’ll try it to stay here.
