Andy Foster, executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, has an unparalleled perspective on the sport, as a former fighter, promoter, judge, coach, fan, and now top regulator. He has identified the culture of extreme weight cutting as biggest danger in MMA, and he is addressing the issue with characteristic aggressiveness.

Foster worked with the Office of Public Affairs for the California Dept of Consumer Affairs to put create a series of informative videos on our sport. The first was an explanation by the dean of MMA referees, ‘Big’ John McCarthy, of changes in the Unified Rules that are rolling out in 2017.

Below, Dr. Edmund Ayoub Jr. discusses dehydration. Dr. Ayoub is the vice president of the Association of Ringsid e Physicians, and is a Ringside Physician for the CSAC.

Even casual fans are aware that dehydration can lead to an increased risk of concussion, and there is as well a general sense that it is bad for the kidneys. However, in less than the time it takes to watch two rounds Dr. Ayoud details the strain on your brain, heart, kidneys, nutrient system, and muscles, noting that the deleterious effects can be permanent. He also addresses head-on the belief that cutting leaves you likely stronger than your opponent, and addresses a safe amount to cut.

The video breaks down a number of critical questions:
•Why is it important to avoid dehydration when working to make weight?
•How much is a safe amount of weight to cut per day or week?
•What is Severe Dehydration?
•What problems can arise from Severe Dehydration?
•Is IV hydration superior to oral hydration
•Does drastic weight cutting relate to performance?
•Does dehydration relate to neurological health?

This video is highly recommended for every fighter and coach in the industry, as well as everyone who believes they are true fans.

Special thanks to the UFC and Golden Boy for the fighting and training footage.
