Cris Cyborg gets a boxing license
History may be repeating itself – Cris Cyborg just got a professional boxing license in California.
The biggest bout in combat sports history was a boxing match between arguably the best fighter in mixed martial arts and the greatest boxer of his generation. The first official step took place on December 1, 2016, when McGregor was issued a professional boxing license by the California State Athletic Commission. Nine months later, on August 26, 2017, the event was birthed.

Where McGregor is now the #2 ranked Pound 4 Pound fighter in the UFC, Cris Cyborg is now inarguably the best fighter in women’s MMA. With the caveat that this is pure conjecture and hope, the Floyd Mayweather of women’s boxing is Cecilia Braekhus. And she fights in boxing’s welterweight division (147), just a little easier for Cyborg to make than her champion MMA featherweight cutoff of 145.
The Cartagena, Colombia born Norwegian citizen is 31-0 in boxing. Since 2014 she has been the undisputed female welterweight champion, and is the first and only woman in any weight class, and one of just four boxers male or female, to hold the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO titles simultaneously.
Over the summer Cyborg had the opportunity to spar with the second best female boxer in the world, Claressa Shields, who reigns at 168, three divisions up from 147.
It’d be a heck of a match-up between [Braekhus] and Cris, said Shields in June. That would be a really good fight. Wouldn’t be like Cecilia Braekhus would just have in the bag. And long as Cris is in shape, gets the boxing down and be focused on it, it would be very, very competitive.
