Conor on gay marriage: We all deserve equal rights
Conor McGregor: “We all deserve equal rights. We’re all human here at the end of the day — regardless of color, gender, sexuality. Any of that. It’s all meaningless.”

UFC featherweight contender Conor McGregor and his coach John Kavanagh appeared recently at a media day Thursday to promote the fight with division champion Jose Aldo at UFC 189 on July 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a refreshing change from the usual trash talk, the pair discussed Friday’s national referendum in Ireland on a proposed amendment in favor of gay marriage to Article 41 of the Irish Constitution.
McGregor has tweeted about it earlier in the week.
“We all deserve equal rights,” said McGregor to Marc Raimondi for MMAFighting.com. “We’re all human here at the end of the day — regardless of color, gender, sexuality. Any of that. It’s all meaningless. We all deserve the same rights. It just feels right to me.”
“I can put something out and it can reach a lot of people, so I decided that it was the right thing to do that. My whole team done it with me. We are proud to support that.”
“The support for the yes vote has been phenomenal. We will see. [The law] is stone age s–. It’s a new age. It’s time to get with it.”
John Kavanagh, head of SBG-Ireland and of the greatest trainers in the sport, was equally adamant.
“It’s just an equal rights matter,” said Kavanaugh. “It’s just kind of insane in 2015 we’re having this conversation. It’s sort of embarrassing to be honest.
“July 11 is important in terms of sport. But sport is sport. That’s all. This is the most important day of my life in terms of a country standing up to religious bigotry.”
