Combate Global promoting 8-woman strawweight tourney Aug. 13
This Friday night, Combate Global will, for the first time, promote an all-woman one-night tournament, with the winner earning the number one contenders spot in the strawweight division.
One-night tournaments have been a staple of Combate Global — formerly Combate Americas — content for years, and has long been a tradition in MMA since its inception. This tourney will feature fighters from six different countries, including the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, and France. The card will also feature alternate bouts in case injuries force the winners from the quarterfinals out of the tournament. In addition, the event will also feature a men’s flyweight bout.
One side of the tournament’s bracket will see undefeated fighter Yasmine Jauregui (5-0) face Stephanie Frausto (8-7), and Philly native Criszaida Adames (4-0) represent the Dominican Republic against Yajaira La Pantera Negra” Cunningham, of Florida. The other quarterfinal bouts include Mexico’s Paulina Vargas (4-1) against Muay Thai specialist Claudia Diaz (1-2), and Karen Cedillo (4-2) against French fighter Claire Lopez (2-3).
The English-language broadcast will air exclusively on Paramount+ at 11 pm ET, while the Spanish-language version of the event can be found on Univision and TUDN. The card will emanate from Univision’s studios in Miami, Florida.
Recently, Univision acquired “significant” stakes in the promotion after it has consistently hovered around 400,000 viewers for its recent events. An improvement on previous years as the promotion has also seen a growth in drawing new viewers in several key audience demographics.
