The earliest recorded use of hitting something in MMA training is a dwarf kicking a hanigng, dead, stuffed pig.
Pankration debuted in the Greek Olympic Games 2,660 years ago, with a rule set nearly identical to the early IVCs – no biting and no eye gouging. Judging by the images left on vases and walls, the kicking repetoire was limited to the teep, so the techniques in MMA have likely come a ways.
Unequivocally, the equipment used to develop fighting skills has vastly improved. Now we gets mats and a shower, then they had soft dirt and a thing to scrape the dirt off afterwards.
Now we have 16 oz gloves that use up to 13 layers of foam, then they had strips of soft leather.
Among the pieces of equipment that have seen development just over the past 100 years are pads a trainer can hold to mimic a fight.
Today the three variations mainly in use are the suitcase pad, focus mitts, and Thai pads.
Now John Brown’s Combat Sports International has combined the suitcase pad and the Thai pad into a unique training pad they call The Combat Sports Multiplex Shield.
