Coach: Velasquez’s surgery successful, targeting March return

Javier Mendez: “I assume he’ll be good to go for full-time training by December. He’ll have all of November and part of October off. I don’t see him being out that long at all.”

UFC Heavyweight champion had to withdraw from his scheduled UFC 180 bout with Fabricio Werdum due to a knee injury and this week had surgery. The surgery repaired a partial tear in his meniscus which will keep him out of training for three to four weeks and today coach Javier Mendez said they are targeting a March 2015 return.

“It depends on the UFC,” said Mendez. “Whatever decision they make is what’s going to happen, provided he’s healed. 

“I assume he’ll be good to go for full-time training by December. He’ll have all of November and part of October off. I don’t see him being out that long at all.”
