Coach Roach not so sure GSP fights at 185 again

One of the great boxing coaches of his generation, Freddie Roach, was in Geoges St-Pierre’s corner at UFC 217, as the welterweight G.O.A.T. won the middleweight belt, becoming only the fourth fighter in league history to win a belt in two divisions. While many declared the win a sign that GSP is the best MMA fighter ever, he gassed hard, and was not looking good, up until he looked Great.

It was Roach’s first time cornering in the UFC, and he was as candid as ever during a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour.

I was a little concerned [about his stamina],” conceded Roach, as transcribed by Adam Guillen Jr. for MMA Mania. “It was obviously a fast-paced fight, and he did box very well in the first round and I was very happy with it. Bisping is a very tough opponent, he came back in the second round.”

He countered our right hand with his right hand, so that’s where I saw the left hook would work because he is a little bit lazy bringing it back. He was getting a little bit tired.”

I think moving up in the weight division, I am not sure that’s his best weight division or if we will fight there again. We will see where it goes. The weight got to him, he’s not used to carrying that much weight and it fatigued him quicker than usual. Again, we will work it all out and get together with the whole team and discuss what the next best move is for Georges.

In great news, Roach will be a permanent part of GSP’s corner moving forward. The next question then is where will he move forward to?

Both the fighter and UFC president Dana White say that a middleweight title defense is next, vs. interim champion Robert Whittaker. Or GSP might drop back to 170 and try to reclaim his old title vs. Tyron Woodley. Or he might have the biggest fight in history vs. Conor McGregor.
