Coach: Aldo should be in the G.O.A.T. conversation

Andre Pederneiras: “I’m not saying that Daniel Cormier isn’t great, but I say Jose Aldo needs to be on the same list. That’s my opinion.”

The list of greatest of all time includes Daniel Cormier, Fedor Emelianenko, Demetrious Johnson, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, and Georges St-Pierre. Jose Aldo’s head coach Andre Pederneiras spoke recently with the media and said his fighter should be in the conversation. 

If you’re asking all these guys maybe just Anderson and St-Pierre stay with the belt for so long like him, said Pederneiras to Alexander K. Lee for MMA Fighting. Cormier has won right now, but I don’t think he’ll stay for so long to defend his title like [Aldo]. And I think for a guy to be among the best, the greats — you know he defended his title for a long time against many different guys.

I’m not saying that Cormier isn’t great, but I say Aldo needs to be on the same list. That’s my opinion.

Aldo entered the WEC with a 10-1 record; the sole loss was at lightweight, rather than featherweight. He won four in a row in the WEC, then won the title, and then defended it successfully twice. When the UFC acquired the WEC, Aldo became the inaugural champion, and defended it seven more times.

Then the got flattened by Conor McGregor, who eventually left the division. Aldo won the interim feather title back with a win over Frankie Edgar, and was later promoted to full champion. Then he lost back to back fights vs. Max Holloway.

And Saturday he bounced back with a win over a surging Jeremy Stephens. Jose Aldo is in the G.O.A.T. conversation.
