I first saw Christy Martin fight on the undercard of Frank Bruno vs. Mike Tyson II on March 16, 1996. Tyson won the World Underwear Championship, and when it was it was over, one of the guys watching said, “That girl fighting that Irish girl was the best fight on the card.” I had been blinded by bias to that simple fact until someone said it.

Martin would go on to become for women’s boxing what Ronda Rousey is to women’s mixed martial arts – the figure who brought the sport to the public’s attention. Martin has had her well-publicized struggles, most prominently when her husband/trainer stabbed and beat her for an hour before shooting her through one of the stab wounds in her chest. Jim Martin, 25 years her senior, made good on decades of violent promises after Martin said she was leaving him for a woman. He is currently in poor health, and serving a 25-year sentence.

One would think there’s a natural bond of respect between Martin and Rousey, but during a recent interview with FightHype, Martin said Rousey was a poor role model.

“I would give anything, if I was ten years younger, just to show her,” said Martin. “Are you kidding me? Holly Holmes (sic) knocks you out? Holly Holmes (sic) hits like a feather.”

For the record, the “pillow fisted” Holly Holm, not to be confused with former world champion Larry Holmes, beat Martin via unanimous decision in 2005. And Martin wasn’t trash talking to set up an inter combat sports match – she retired in 2012 after back to back losses.

“So Ronda Rousey to me is the worst public female image that we could ever have out there. … Simply because she cannot sit here and have an interview with you without cursing word after word after word. Come on, we’re out here to set an example for women, young women, young girls, people in general,” opined the role model.

“Talk like you’re intelligent. When you have to use every other word as ‘Eff this and eff that’, that shows your lack of intelligence, lack of vocabulary.”

“She should take a look in the mirror. A strong look,” said Martin, who then inadvertently but comically did exactly what she had accused Rousey of. “Not only did she get her s*** knocked out, by a non puncher… You know, she’s a poor example for a person.”

“I don’t think we’ll ever see her December 30th. Unless Dana White has some serious contract on her that she can’t do anything else including movies and commercials and so on, unless she gets back in the ring. We will never see Ronda Rousey again.”

Ronda Rousey fights UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in the main event of UFC 207 on December 30, 2016 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
