Carmouche fought through sickness to get to the fight
Liz Carmouche: “My 2-year-old was really sick leading up to this. I was like, all right, I’ve been able to not get it. My wife, she was sick. I’m like, OK, they both got sick. I was fine. Then the last week it finally got me.”
It’s likely not worth mention when a fighter cites sickness following a loss. However, when Liz Carmouche talked sickness after her win at flyweight over Jennifer Maia at UFC Fight Night 133 on Saturday night, you know it’s true. And ‘Girlrilla’ told Ben Fowlkes and John Morgan for MMAjunkie that she saw it coming.
My 2-year-old was really sick leading up to this, said Carmouche. I was like, all right, I’ve been able to not get it. My wife, she was sick. I’m like, OK, they both got sick. I was fine. Then the last week it finally got me. I was like, ahhh, they got me!
On the Sunday before fight week, Carmouche described her condition as “dead sick.”
Fever and everything, she said. Coming into this my coach was a little bit worried because I was just coughing up my lungs every day.
Still, Carmouche won ever round on every judge’s scorecard. She reports that a tough day at flyweight is better than any day at 135. And she knows what she wants next.
I’m looking at that belt. That’s what I want. You know, 125 has been the weight class I’ve been pushing for ever since I got into the UFC. It’s what I’ve always wanted because, honestly I’m so much smaller. Even my opponent tonight, she was 142, and I was 133, and that’s after I drank a bottle of water. …
I know that if you put me in that championship contention, you put me in there for that belt, and I’m going to put on the performance I need to.
