Following an August 15, 2009 loss to Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos for the first ever Strikeforce women’s title, the face of women’s MMA took a break from the sport. Just a month after the defeat, she was reported as playing the leading role in a major motion picture, “Haywire” directed by Steven Soderbergh, which was supposed to hit theaters yesterday. Two month after the defeat Carano appeared as one of the cover athletes for the October 19, 2009 edition of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. And then he dissapeared from MMA.

And now the former Xtreme Couture fighter is back to MMA, training for a June 18 return fight. In a sport where fighters switching camps can lead hurt feelings and weeks of criticism via interviews and twitter, former coach Randy Couture was all class.

“I’m all for it,” Couture said. “I want all the fighters at my gym to go wherever they need to go to get what they need to progress and become the best fighters they can be.

“They can’t always get that at Xtreme Couture.”

And what does new coach Greg Jackson say about how it happened?

“She called me up and said ‘Hey, can I come down to Albuquerque to train?'” Jackson said. “I said, ‘Sure.’ So, she came down to train.”

“We don’t have any 145ers, and she’s really sweet and really nice. So, those are the things you look for. And she’s talented; she’s very talented.”

“She works hard, she does what’s expected, and I’m impressed. I’m just starting to get to know her as fighter. But, she’s here all the time and she works really, really hard.”

“She’s got the talent, and she has a great work ethic. Those two things will take you as far as your will can. As I get to know her more as far as helping her out for the fight, we’ll get to a better sense of it. But, she definitely has all the talent and all the potential in the world.”
