A Halifax man found shot on the sidewalk in front of his two-storey house at 7051 Abbott Dr. on Saturday night was the city’s fifth murder victim this year.
Halifax Regional Police say the murdered man is Timothy John Kelly, 44, a used car dealership employee and mixed martial arts fighter.
Some residents described him as the ideal neighbour, while others wondered about his activities.
A passerby found Mr. Kelly on the ground in front of his house with multiple gunshot wounds at about 10 p.m. Saturday.
He was pronounced dead at hospital a short time later, said police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter.
A bullet hole was also found in the window of a side door of the house.
An autopsy had yet to be done to determine the cause of death, but police have ruled his death a homicide.
Const. Palmeter said the dead man was “known to police,” but he wouldn’t elaborate.
Several neighbours on the usually quiet west-end Halifax street said they saw police cars outside Mr. Kelly’s home from time to time and wondered if there were problems in the home.
Some neighbours suggested he was separated or divorced and has two daughters and a grandchild. One neighbour said she believes Mr. Kelly had a girlfriend.
Const. Palmeter said no one was in the home when Mr. Kelly was found outside.
Police had initially described the dead man as partially clothed when found, but Const. Palmeter amended that to say he had not been dressed for the weather.
Barbara Dacey, who lives across the street from the home, said Mr. Kelly was a wonderful neighbour.
“He seemed happy as a clam. He was a wonderful, good neighbour.”
She said he sometimes helped fix her car and she appreciated the care he took with his home and property.
“He always decorated for Halloween and Christmas and he always kept his lawn just perfect.”
