At the 2015 Miss Universe, host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Ariadna Gutierrez from Colombia has won, when in fact the judges had selected Pia Wurtzbach from the Philippines. Gutierrez was crowned, but three minutes later, the crown was removed by outgoing titleholder Paulina Vega from Gutierrez and given to Wurtzbach. Then the telecast abruptly ended.

After the UFC 205 co-main event announcer Bruce Buffer said it was going to the judge’s scorecards. He suddenly and unusually exited the Octagon, presumably to confirm something. Then he came center stage and announced the scores, 47-47, 47-47, and 48-47 for Woodley, calling it a split-decision victory for Woodley.

Then Buffer exited the Octagon again.

Woodley began to speak with color commentator Joe Rogan, when suddenly they had to stop for an announcement. Woodley did not look well.

Buffer reannounced it, properly, as a Majority Draw. The champion retains his title in the event of a draw, so the outcome and judge’s scores did not change.

However, Woodley still did not look well.

Some fans thought Buffer had pulled a Steve Harvey and misread the cue card. However, Bruce Buffer has been working UFC events for 20 years. The new New York State Athletic Commission not so much.

As can be seen on the judge’s scorecard, Buffer read what was written.

Buffer did as he was directed to do by the commission, and even questioned it. And given that no two commissions handle every single identically, Buffer’s response was the responsible one. Indeed, it was the only one.

With characteristic class, Buffer tried to take some degree of responsibility on himself during an interview with TMZ Sports.

The bottom line is that Bruce Buffer did not do a Steve Harvey, he did what he was told to by a government body.
