The main card of UFC Fight Night 81 featured an important heavyweight bout between two divisional top fifteen fighters in Matt Mitrione and Travis Browne.

Both men came out light on their feet, moving and trying to figure out distance while letting some of their strikes go, but not fully committing to anything. A Browne (18-3-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) knee to the body landed but was answered with a right hand by Mitrione (9-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC). Browne landed with a right hand in the final 30 seconds of the opening round, but moments later connected with a poke to the right eye of Mitrione that brought the action to a halt.

Kicking off Round 2, the two men began throwing heavy shots but another Browne eye poke halted the fight once again. Again, Mitrione chose to continue and no point was deducted for the repeated fouls. After the action continued, Mitrione began firing big single shots while Browne utilized his front kick to the body with frequency.

Mitrione landed a heavy left hand early in Round 3, but wasn’t able to follow up before Browne landed his own hard shot. Moments later, Browne put the fight on the floor and ended up in mount. From the dominant position, Browne landed heavy punches and elbows until the referee called a halt to the bout at the 4:09 mark of Round 3. Following the bout, the right eye of Mitrione was a horribly swollen mess.
