However, “The American Psycho” isn’t quite ready to declare himself a sacrificial lamb and seems to believe stars are aligning for him to score a massive upset.
“I’m a little superstitious, and it’s on the 13th,” Bonnar told USA TODAY Sports. “There is a lot of stuff with the number 13 going on, and that’s a sign for me, for one. I’ve got a kid coming, and that to me means I need to do something spectacular. And three, I feel like I’m in a ‘Rocky’ movie. I’m this huge underdog in his backyard.”
Of course, Saturday’s pay-per-view headliner isn’t being scripted by Hollywood talent, and the reality of facing a man who boasts knockout wins over notables such as Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort, Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt, Yushin Okami, Griffin and others could provide a rude awakening. Still, Bonnar has never been defeated by knockout, and his career has been punctuated by moments of incredible tenacity and durability.
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the 35-year-old, who was called on only after a planned headliner between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar fell through. It could be one of his final trips to the cage, and Bonnar said he’s not going to waste what he’s been given.
“This is a huge opportunity,” Bonnar said. “I’m not a guy that always has the best luck, but once in a while a big opportunity comes along, and I try to take advantage of it.”
