Bobby Green to host anti-violence march 10/19 in San Bernardino
Bobby Green: “This is just showing love. This is an event for families to come together as a community and to love each and every person around.”
Lightweight Bobby Green is on an eight-fight win streak, the last four in the UFC, but as his career has found great success, his personal life has suffered devastation.
On May 31, Green’s younger brother, two uncles, and cousin were hit in a drive-by shooting. His brother, Mitchell Davis, Jr., died at age 23, and did a cousin.
In September his older brother was shot three times, but survived.
“My other brother just got shot,” said Green to Heidi Fang for MMAFightCorner. “I’m just praying to God. I’m asking ‘Why me? What is it that I’ve done? Am I cursed? Or why am I experiencing all these experiences?’ Someone just told me this, ‘You’ve got these big shoulders for a reason. You’ve got these big shoulders because you’ve got to keep weight of the world on it.'”
Green, a San Bernardino native, will honor his brother’s memory by hosting a crime awareness walk called “The Green Mile.” The one mile trek from Secombe Lake Park on 5th Street to the San Bernardino Police Department starts at 11:00 am PT on Sunday, Oct. 19 and the event will last until 3:00 pm PT. There will be a full slate of activities for those who participate from face painting to food and jump houses.
“This is just showing love,” said Green. “This is an event for families to come together as a community and to love each and every person around. We’re coming together. This is not anything negative. So if anyone is negative, don’t come. This is positivity. I’m trying to have churches, the police will be there, we all want to have a good time.”
“This is a peace walk. It was basically just letting our city know that we can’t keep standing for this. There are women being shot. There are elderly people being hurt. It’s like people have no souls. When did we ever get this wrong that it was okay to take life? Where are our youth that have their wires crossed that think it’s cool to be a gang banger? They think it’s cool to shoot someone. ‘Now I’m a man because I shot someone.’ No. What makes you a man is standing in the fires that most men can’t stand, doing things that most men can’t do. That’s what makes you a man.”
