Blessed blasts Aldo over fight change

Conor McGregor took Jose Aldo’s belt in 13 seconds just over a year ago. McGregor never defended it so Aldo fought Frankie Edgar for the interim title. Then McGregor never, ever defended it, so Aldo’s interim title was made official. However, Aldo was not prepared for an immediate title defense, so Max Holloway fought Anthony Pettis for a new interim title, and won.

It appeared that a unification fight between Holloway and Aldo at UFC 208 was on. Unfortunately, Holloway suffered a leg injury in the Pettis fight, that left him unable to train for four to six weeks, making the February 11, 2017, UFC 208 fight not feasible.

Any dumbass doubts as whether the injury is legit can be put to rest.

However, Aldo now says his next step is fighting for an interim lightweight belt. Division champion Conor McGregor says he wants to take a break until May when he and longtime partner Dee Devlin are expecting the birth of their first child. So the interim title fight would be vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, or conceivably Tony Ferguson.

“The Brooklyn fight is not happening,” said Aldo to Ariel Helwani for MMA Fighting. “I now expect and believe I will be fighting in early March. Either March 3 or March 4, I can’t remember. I believe they will soon announce an interim lightweight title fight with me. They’ve been trying to find me an opponent, and — surprise, surprise — at least one has already turned down the fight against me. I’m waiting to see who they will find.”

Holloway is not impressed.

I want to make sure I take care of this injury, heal up and then maybe beginning of May or the end of April if that works. With injuries, I’ve been able to heal pretty quick but they told me four to six weeks so we’ll see how it is.”

The thing that blows my mind, Aldo makes guys wait for months. Some guys who are supposed to fight him don’t even get to fight him. Erik Koch was supposed to fight him and Aldo got hurt. This guy makes people wait for months and months and he’s yelling at me? Get out of here. I didn’t even have a contract and you’re getting salty at me? You have contracts and you’re pulling out of them. Pulling out of a fight is just like not taking a fight.

He retires and then unretires and now he wants to call the shots? Mother f***er, your belt was handed to you twice. He can go ahead and wait. I had to fight for mine. Get out of here with your crazy talk. Stay healthy and you’re going to see ‘Blessed’ in the New Year.
