Interesting officials assignment for next WEC show

The California State Athletic Commission made out its official assignments for the 1/10 WEC show in Sacramento, with an interesting name on the list – John McCarthy.

McCarthy is listed as a judge, not a referee, for the show. McCarthy has not worked at a UFC event since he originally left officiating to take a job with The Fight Network. McCarthy no longer works for the Canadian station, and has returned to officiating, regularly appearing on shows in California, and has been assigned to referee Saturday night’s Josh Thomson vs. Gilbert Melendez Strikeforce lightweight title match.

Both McCarthy and UFC would have been informed today of the assignment. McCarthy can decline the assignment if he wishes.

Dana White had been critical of McCarthy, not for his work as a referee, but of wanting to be a star, in the past. He had made it clear he wasn’t at the least going to ask for McCarthy to officiate on his shows. McCarthy is not licensed as a referee in Nevada. He is licensed in Ohio but was not assigned to this year’s show in Columbus.
