There are multiple credible reports that UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn has been injured and is out of his fight with Ricardo Lamas in the main event of UFC Fight Night 97. The nature of the injury is as yet unknown. Further, it is not known whether the UFC will be able to find a replacement in less than two weeks.

Penn’s return appears cursed. He was scheduled to fight Dennis Siver, and then Cole Miller, at UFC 197. Unfortunately, Penn was suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after he voluntarily disclosed out-of-competition use of an IV on the recommendation of a physician. And now this.

Penn, 37, has not fought since an odd, losing effort vs. Frankie Edgar in The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale on July 6, 2014. He is 0-3-1 his last four and has not won since beating Matt Hughes on November 20, 2010, at UFC 123.

UFC Fight Night 97 streams on UFC Fight Pass, on October 15, 2016, live from the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Philippines
