In a show of extraordinary resilience and growth across a decade, Michael Bisping became the UFC middleweight champion. Holding a championship is harder still than winning it, but Bisping prevailed in a brutal rematch vs. Dan Henderson.
Then, there was a plan.
#2 middleweight contender Chris Weidman was to fight #4 Yoel Romero, and #3 Jacare Souza was to fight #1 Luke Rockhold. Whoever won most compellingly got the next title shot.
Bisping said if Romero won, he would refuse the fight, on the basis of a failed PED test and the prolonged benefits of drug use, even years later. But when Rockhold got hurt and withdrew from the fight, and Romero won via flying Holy F@$%ing $#@! knee, it was apparent Bisping’s next fight should be vs. Romero.
Souza fights Tim Boetsch on February 11, 2017, at UFC 208. Weidman fights Gegard Mousasi on April 8, 2017, at UFC 210. And it looked like Romero was in.
Bisping in the mean time was training, and enjoying the perks of being a UFC star, like an appearance in xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
But now FightNet’s John Pollock reports that Bisping is out until May with a knee injury.

Romero is now on an eight-fight winning streak. Whatever complaints fans had about him being a blanket were disabled by his KO of the year candidate vs. Weidman in November. The question now is will be wait around for the title until May, or will he try to drive the win streak to nine before getting a shot at the belt?
