UFC welterweight G.O.A.T. Georges St-Pierre spent a year negotiating a return to the league, after taking time off since his last fight in 2013. Finally on 3/1/2017 St-Pierre’s return was made official and it was announced he was fighting Michael Bisping for the title. Last month he announced that he would be ready to fight, after October. He later revealed that the cause for the delay is a lingering eye issue.

When GSP said he would not be able to fight this summer, UFC president Dana White announced the Bisping fight was off. As Bisping is still recovering from knee surgery, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker will be fighting for an interim title. White further said that GSP was willing to fight the top welterweights.

However, St-Pierre recently said he wants to fight Bisping, whether or not he had a title. Now during a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, Bisping said he still believes he will fight GSP.

Georges is saying that he still wants to fight me, whether or not I have the belt – believe you me, I will have that belt – so just throwing that out there,” said Bisping, as transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMA Fighting. “Yoel, Robert Whittaker, they’re going to fight for the interim. Of course, I will defend the belt against one of them but it sounds like me and Georges are still going to get it on. So I’m a happy man.

To my knowledge, [the eye injury was] why the fight was taking so long to materialize. Now as far as I was aware, Georges knew, the UFC knew, I knew but it wasn’t my news to talk about. It wasn’t my news to tell the public. That’s why I was still very confident in the fight happening. That’s why I’m still confident the fight is going to happen.
