Bellator to launch welterweight GP

Scott Coker puts together awesome tournaments. His Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix was so good UFC president Dana White said he liked it. Now the boss at Bellator, Coker’s heavyweight tournament will choose the promotion’s new champ and is unfolding solidly. And now Lance Pugmire for the LA Times reports that Coker’s newest tournament will be a welterweight grand prix, drawing from Bellator’s deepest division, one Coker says is better than the UFC’s.

The 8-man will begin on September 29. That event is headlined by welterweight champion Rory MacDonald, who will step up to challenge middleweight champ Gegard Mousasi. MacDonald will be entering the GP at a later event in 2019.

#170GP fights at the September 29 event may include:
•A former champions Douglas Lima vs. Andrey Koreshkov trilogy fight; and,
•An all England Michael ‘MVP’ Page vs. Paul Daley fight.

Unrelated to the tournament, the September event may also feature a fourth Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva fight.

On Tuesday Bellator is holding a press conference in Manhattan during which further details will likely be announced.
