Bellator NYC three weirdest moments

Three of the fights at Bellator NYC were each in their own way weird for the ages.

Bellator NYC was intended to be a test of whether Bellator can go head to head vs. the UFC in pay per view, or not. Anything over 300,000 buys will be considered a rousing success by president Scott Coker. Buys information should come out over the next couple of weeks.

Another question is what did the fans get for $50? There ended up being six fights – when Fedor vs. Meathead ended immediately, the swing fight was brought in as a bizarro co-main spot occupier.

In the end, three of the six bouts were good, normal fights. Chael Sonnen looked solid in shutting down Wanderlei Silva. Neither man fought like a 40-year-old, and neither man fought like they did when they were 30, either. Gracie’s defeat of Marfone looked like the prelim fight that it was. And Lima’s defeat of Larkin was a solid fight, that shows Coker and matchmaker Rick Chou know how to grow world-class talent, even without all the advantages of owning the world’s dominant league.

Three other fights were each in their own way weird for the ages.

Aaron Pico was hailed as the best prospect in MMA history, but he lost in 24 seconds.

Cris Cyborg, Renan Barao, and Kazushi Sakuraba all lost their MMA debuts, so Pico is still in great company.

The -750 favorite Michael Chandler literally had the stool pulled out from under him by an official. Chandler injured his foot and the referee took it upon himself to give Chandler a time out for the doctor to inspect the injury.

Chandler stood up from his stool, took steps at the doctor’s direction, and when he sat back down, an official had removed the stool, leading him to collapse on the floor. Fight was over.

Despite the ankle, Chandler was fighting like a champion, too.

And then there was the double knockdown.

And the national anthems right before the main event, that was weird too. So what does it all mean? Maybe it means these things happen in mixed martial arts.
