MMA pioneer Mikey Burnett and his son were shot on Monday as they exited a gym during an attempted armed robbery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Now two teens have been arrested in connection with the shooting.

News on 6 has the story.

The shooting happened in a parking lot near the Rib Crib and 10 Gym located at 31st and Garnett at about 7:25 p.m. on Monday, February 29, 2016.

Officers identify the two teens as Harold Thompson, 16, and Kywaun Washington, 17.

According to an arrest report, Thompson walked up to Mikey Burnett and asked to use his cell phone just as Mikey and his son were leaving the gym. As Burnett was about to give him his phone, Thompson pulled out a gun, pointed it at Burnett and demanded his wallet, the report says. As Burnett tried to move the gun away from his face, the report says, he was shot multiple times.

Mikey’s son Freddy was on the other side of Mikey’s truck and when he saw what was happening he ran to his father’s aid, according to the report. The report says that as the two Burnetts struggled with Thompson, Washington also began fighting with the victims. That’s when Freddy Thompson was shot in the leg, police say.

A witness saw the two suspects run to a 2001 white Oldsmobile Aurora, got the tag number and followed the car onto Highway 169, according to the report. Police found the car about three hours later in the 700 block of East 41st Place and put it under surveillance. When the owner of the car got in it and drove away at 6 a.m. Tuesday, police pulled it over, their report says. According to the report, they then learned the identity of Thompson and Washington.

They arrested Thompson in the 2700 block of 45th Street North and Washington in the 4300 block of North Garrison. Police say both Thompson and Washington admitted to trying to rob the Burnetts and to shooting them both. Washington also admitted to his part in the crimes, the report says.

Police booked both Thompson and Washington on one count of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. They say Washington had an outstanding warrant and that both have faced felony charges in the past.

Police said they expect both Burnetts to recover, though one of them had to have a second round of surgery Tuesday afternoon.

Police took two teenage girls into custody Tuesday morning at the same time they took Thompson and Washington into custody, but after questioning them police released the girls.
