Andrei Arlovski is a throwback to the era before the modern UFC. The Belarusian heavyweight debuted in the UFC in 2000, a full year before Zuffa’s purchase of the promotion from SEG. Starting in late 2002, Arlovski went on a six fight win streak that included winning and defending the UFC heavyweight title. He was one of the most feared heavyweights in the world.

That was over a decade ago. Arlovski would leave the UFC in 2008 and spend time competing for whichever promotion would pay: Elite XC, Affliction, Strikeforce, amongst others. Arlovski roared back to the UFC in 2014, winning his first four fights back with the promotion, but would drop his next five in bouts that were wild and in some cases Arlovski was close to winning.

Arlovski’s style has always been exciting and that style has gotten him in trouble in a division where it can only take one punch to change the course of a fight. Arlovski broke that streak in his last fight, a decision win over Junior Albini is hopeful that a change in his style will continue to help him stay in the win column:

Sometimes, when I see I’ve hurt someone, I jump in like there’s nothing tomorrow, he told MMAjunkie in advance of a pay-per-view main-card fight against Stefan Struve (28-9 MMA, 12-7 UFC) at UFC 222, which takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Sometimes, I get caught somehow.

Finally, hopefully, I’m going to stick with my game plan, Arlovski said. I’m going to hear my corner, and it’s going to be an easy and good fight for me.
