Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz had a remarkable fight at UFC 183 on on January 31, 2015. On Feb 3, Kevin Iole revealed that Anderson Silva had failed a blood test for two PEDs, Drostanolone and Androsterone. Shortly afterwards it was learned that the test had been administered on on Jan. 9.

The first response came from Silva’s personal physician. Dr. Tannure also serves as the medical director of the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA).

“Anderson told me he’s disappointed, upset because he didn’t use steroids,” said Dr. Tannure as transcribed by Guilherme Cruz for MMAfighting. “He will ask for the confirmation test because he believes the only explanation is a contamination or a mistake from the lab. He told me: ‘I have an impeccable career history and I wouldn’t want to tarnish my image.’”

Next up was Silva manager Ed Soares, who brought word from Silva himself.

“This is my nineteenth fight in the UFC,” read the statement. “I have been thoroughly tested many times and have never had a positive drug test. I have not taken any performance-enhancing drugs. My stance on drugs is, and will always be, the same. I’m an advocate for a clean sport.”

Then results came in from a test administered on Jan 19th, and Silva was clean.

Now the Nevada Athletic Commission has announced that Silva failed a test administered immediately after the Jan 31st fight. He tested positive for three prohibited substances, Oxazepam, Temazepam, and Drostanalon. The Benzodiazepines Oxazepam and Temazepam are used to treat anxiety and insomnia, respectively. Drostanalon is an anabolic steroid.

Oxazepam and Temazepam were not on WADA’s prohibited drug list; Silva was cited for them as he did not disclose them on the pre-fight medical questionnaire, which asks whether in the preceding month the fighter has used any medication, drug, cream, inhalant, or injection, whether prescription or over-the-counter.

Silva wrote “no.”

Silve will be required to attend a disciplinary hearing, which will likely be scheduled in March.
