On Tuesday, Bellator Fighting Championships announced the first super fight of their upcoming season as lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez, will take on former UFC competitor, Josh Neer, in a catchweight, non-title fight in May.

According to Bellator, the fight will be the first of a series of super fights the promotion will set up this year pitting their champions against top competition, while they await the chance to defend their titles in 2010.

The promotion says the bout between Alvarez and Neer will take place in May on one of their nationally televised events, but a date and location are yet to be determined.

Eddie Alvarez won the Bellator lightweight title last year by submitting Toby Imada in the tournament finals, and the Philadelphia based fighter also fights under the Dream banner in Japan.

After leaving the UFC last year, Josh Neer has gone on to fight in regional promotions, most recently submitting Anselmo Martinez in Shark Fights to win their interim welterweight title.
