Former ONE bantamweight world champion John Lineker (35-9) didn’t show up for his scheduled ONE Fight Night 7 pre-event interview this past week, but his opponent – Brazilian MMA star Fabricio Andrade (8-2) – joined the call and was in fine form.
Andrade, who faces his compatriot in a rematch for the vacant strap on February 24, did not hold anything back.
Just days before their first encounter last October, Lineker missed weight and was stripped of the ONE bantamweight world title on the scale. Then at ONE Fight Night 3, Andrade was seemingly winning the match in the third round, but an accidental low blow rendered “Hands of Stone” unable to continue, leading to a no contest.
The man known as “Wonder Boy” hasn’t forgotten that episode, and it has fueled him up to this point. Now, less than a week away from ONE Fight Night 7, Andrade brought the heat and gave North American fans every reason to tune in to the show (which can be viewed live and for free with an Amazon Prime membership).
Here is every fiery quote that came from Andrade during the interview.
On the absence of Lineker:
“Is he even gonna show up for the fight?,” Andrade asked.
On whether he feels disrespected by Lineker’s absence:
“Man, it must be embarrassing for him. He’s going to show up, and what is he going to say? Even in the last interview, he probably is just embarrassed,” Andrade speculated.
“He doesn’t want to be in this position. So, I don’t know why. I’m not angry or mad or anything. I think it’s just funny that he didn’t show up.”
On Lineker’s statement, “A king without a crown is not a king”:
“I don’t know what he’s trying to say. He lost his belt by himself. He didn’t make the weight. He lost the belt and said he would still defend it. After, he almost got knocked out and his face was just blown away,” Andrade offered.
“His head won’t be in a good place. We are a few days away from the fight. He knows what is in front of him. So, of course, he’s afraid, and I don’t know what is happening inside his head.”
On the finishing sequence in the first fight:
“Man, after the first knee that I hit him with, it was over. He was throwing up. Like, he got kicked out and started to throw up,” Andrade said.
“He was not coming back from that. I’m pretty sure I was going to knock him out. But as I said, the guy is talking nonsense. That guy’s not showing up. I don’t know what is happening to him right now.”
On a potential early knockout:
“If he comes to fight, I will knock him out at the beginning of the fight. But in the first fight, we saw that he respected my game. He was walking back a lot and trying to wrestle me, something that we agreed we wouldn’t do before the fight,” Andrade recalled.
“So, coming into this fight, I’m not going to give him any chances. I’m going to take my time. I have 25 minutes to finish him. I don’t believe I need 25 minutes to finish him. But I’m just going to be patient, and I’m going to be ready to knock him out in any (round) of this fight.”
Andrade plans to make a statement in the rematch:
“I think this is the fight for me to make a statement. The first fight was good, but I don’t believe I performed at my best,” he said.
“Coming to this fight is my chance to make John Lineker look easy. As I do that, it’s going to be a huge statement, and people are going to keep talking about this fight for a long time.”
One final message for Lineker:
“See you soon, man. Let’s put the books on the table and finish this conversation. Let’s get it over with.”
