Aside from Mike Pierce, who missed weight by a pound on his first attempt (but made it on his second), the festivities went off without a hitch. That is, until Belfort and Silva weighed in and squared off for their photo opportunity.
Silva, who surprisingly was booed loudly upon his introduction, donned a white face mask, and the jawing began immediately. The fighters went nose to nose before some shoving resulted in the fighters’ camps breaking them apart. No punches were thrown, but fighters clearly were agitated.
Belfort said the trouble began a day earlier when, in an interview, he said Silva “wears a mask,” suggesting the champion plays up an insincere villain role in his fights.
“You came here to see a show,” Silva said through translator and manager Ed Soares. “Vitor talks a lot, and you guys are going to see a show.”
