UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo beat Chad Mendes at UFC 179 Saturday night, in what has been widely hailed as the best title fight in the division’s history. If there is a better featherweight title fight, Aldo’s in it – he remains the division’s first and only champion. Despite beating the Team Alpha Male exponent twice, Aldo is open to a trilogy fight with Mendes.

It definitely can happen, Aldo told John Morgan for MMAjunkie via a translator. He’s a great athlete. He’s always going to be fighting in this weight class, right on top.

It’s not (like) because he lost tonight … he’s no good anymore. He’s very good. He’s got great potential, and in the future, we could meet again, and I hope that we have another great fight.

The Nova Uniao trained Aldo made a conscious decision with his coach Andre Pederneiras to engage in the pre fight bickering and sputtering that fans respond so quickly to. With the fight over, Aldo real, better side returned.

“We’ve seen Frankie fighting Gray Maynard a third time, so I think it happens,” said Aldo. “I believe Chad won a lot with this fight. If there’s a third one, we’ll win a lot. He’s a great athlete and will always be fighting at the highest level. Him losing again doesn’t mean he doesn’t work anymore. He has a huge potential and we might meet again in the future. If we keep fighting, our pockets will be full.”

Aldo also downplayed talk about a Nova Uniao vs. Team Alpha male rivalry, particularly following the loss of Renan Barao to T.J. Dillashaw.

“There’s no revenge,” said Aldo . “Aldo is one guy, Barao is another one. We’re friends, we’re teammates, but it’s a fight. Each one will defend his name. I represented not only my team, but the entire country tonight. There’s no revenge. If I fight for it one day, it’s time to stop. As long as I fight for myself, I will stay champion.”

So what do you think UG? Do you want to see a trilogy fight? And does Aldo remain champion?
