On Saturday, September 3, at approximately 4:15 p.m. in Hawthorne, California a drunk driver struck Liam Kowal, the 15-month-old son of professional fighter and coach Marcus Kowal and his partner Mishel Eder. He was in a stroller, being pushed by his aunt, Eder’s 15-year-old sister. She was also struck by the vehicle, and received non-life-threatening leg injuries.

Liam’s parents made the extraordinarily difficult decision to donate his organs. Liam’s heart beats on in another body, that lives.

The alleged drunk driver, Donna Marie Higgins, was stopped by onlookers as she tried to flee the accident. She was arrested at the scene of the crime on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and drunken driving charges, but was released on Sunday after posting bail. When Liam passed, she was re-arrested on suspicion of vehicle manslaughter, but was released after posting $100,000 bond. Higgins is scheduled to appear for arraignment on Nov. 15.

Kowal and Eder share a vast spirit, and say they harbors no ill will towards Higgins. They would, however, like to “speak directly to her” at the trial.

English film director and producer Bobby Razak created a short, painfully powerful film on the life of baby Liam simply titled Liam.

“I promise you Liam, we will live and fight for you,” vows Mishel. “Until the end of time, we will fight for you for the rest of our lives. We will make sure that people know who you are. And how bright and wonderful and amazing you are.

With nothing but love in their hearts, Marcus and Mishel are establishing a foundation, Liam’s Life, dedicated to the education and prevention of alcohol-related tragedies. Please take a moment to enter your information there so you can keep you informed of important milestones and events as the Foundation grows.
