American rapper, actor, businessman, and investor 50 Cent has recently been closing his social network messages with “get the strap.” As a concealed weapon’s holster is strapped on, the phrase “to be strapped” evolved. That, in turn, led to a handgun being referred to as a strap.

A quick trademark search reveals that 50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson III, has applied for use of the term on apparel.

Strap can also be used to refer to a title belt; the dual use of the word lends a cachet, of sorts. However, there was surprise when 50 Cent said he had sold the phrase to Bellator for $1 million.

“l did a deal today l sold (get the strap) for a million dollars to Viacom’s Bellator,” he wrote on his social network. “So you will see lt on some cooler clothing shortly. See how l make something out of nothing. LOL.”

One immediate reaction was if you pay $1,000,000 for three words that aren’t “Just Do It” or “Ready to Rumble” then fighters should get paid more. A number of media outlets reported the social network message as fact.

However, it’s fake news.

A Bellator spokesman told HipHopDX that 50’s statement isn’t true. The spokesperson did confirm that Jackson met with Bellator executives and representatives from parent company Viacom.
