In February a video surfaced showing UFC vet Josh Neer in an unsanctioned ‘gym fight.’ The loser had been harassing Neer on social media, and accepted an invitation to sort it out like men.
Neer got his nickname “The Dentist” after he knocked out the teeth of two opponents in a row, during his undefeated amateur career. Predictably, things did not go the troll’s way.
Patrick Martin, the boxer who earned a 2nd place participation medal in the fight above, is now training at Roundkick, the Des Moines, IA gym where Neer teaches and trains. Further, Martin is competing in Neer’s Midwest Cage Championship.
“I still stand by it, 100 percent,” said Neer to Marc Raimondi for MMA Fighting. “But I ain’t gonna do it again. I just don’t want to get in trouble. He was threatening me. The thing about it is, he was way bigger than me. I fight at 170 pounds and you’re a heavyweight, dude. He was threatening me and I wasn’t doing anything. I was like, ‘If you want to fight, come into the gym and we can settle it.’”
“He got his ass whooped, but he didn’t go and call the police or try to sue me or do anything dumb like that. That’s why I let him come back to the gym. It was like, ‘Alright, you made a mistake. You can come back and train with us.’”
“The dude is 6-foot-6. He’s 260 pounds of solid muscle. He’s strong and big. But he has a lot to learn from MMA. That’s why he came in and he’s learning. If he keeps training, he could do something with it, for sure.”
Neer, 32, fights Andre Santos on Friday at Bellator 146 at WinStar World Casino. He intends to put on a show that sparks another spike of interest on social networks.
“I wish him the best [in] his upcoming bout,” said Martin. “[I] hope he kicks ass and brings home that victory.”
“Josh is a good dude. All the controversy was a misunderstanding and just two guys getting to know one another.”
