A couple of months ago UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor sparred with Hafthór Júlíus Björnsson, The Mountain from Game of Thrones. Seven years ago, Björnsson weighed 230 pounds, but by the time he sparred with the 170 pound Irishman, he was was 396 pounds.

It was a lot of fun, said McGregor afterwards. That’s a big man – 6-foot-9, 400 pounds, and I still folded him up. I was hitting him with some shots – I had to hit him with some shots. He was trying to hit me, as well. People say, ‘He was taking it easy.’ He tried to grab me and tried to pull my head off and I defended – freed the head. I was like, this motherf-cker is so big, I have to start smacking him to the body. … But I sunk him good. Not even a ‘Mountain’ can take these shots from me.

In an interview with GQ, Björnsson saw things differently.

GQ: You know, Conor McGregor is in this package, too. I saw you guys had a little sparring session. He landed a few punches.

Björnsson: He was trying to punch me. I didn’t feel anything. [laughs]

GQ: Who do you think won the fight?

Björnsson: He believes he won it. He does not know that I was taking it easy on him because he has a fight and I didn’t want to break him before the fight. He’s worked too much, so I didn’t want to break him.

GQ: How many meals?

Björnsson: It’s probably around six to eight meals a day.

What’s in those meals?

GQ: Björnsson: I eat a lot of sweet potatoes, a lot of meat, fish, chicken, good fats like cocoa butter, almonds. I love greens, like spinach, avocado, broccoli. I eat very healthy overall—but because of my weight, I need fast carbs, easy carbs. So maybe before a training session or after a training session, I eat what I want.

GQ: Will you ever be big enough?

Björnsson: Getting bigger isn’t a big deal for me. I don’t want to get bigger. But having a nicer body and being stronger is definitely something I’m aiming for.
