A fight worth having is very often won in the scramble. If the matchmaker makes a shark vs. fish fight, and the regulating body (if any) allows it, then there will be no scrambles. But that is not a fight worth having.
A scramble occurs when both fighters are executing to the full extent of their ability, but neither can fully impose his will. The great Cus D’Amato talked about the central role of will in fighting.
When two men are fighting, what you’re watching is more a contest of wills than of skills, with the stronger will usually overcoming skill,” explains D’Amato in a famous quote. “The skill will prevail only when it is so superior to the other man’s skill that the will is not tested.”
A scramble occurs when each fighter’s skill pushes the other into a place where nothing is set. Anything could happen. It is a place where the will and the body have to explode to reach a place of dominance and stability. The ability to reach that place is at the heart of success in fighting.
At Super Fight League 42 the promotion made its Canadian debut at the Stampede Corral in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on 15 August 2015. Vancouver’s Micah Brakefield and Chase Degenhardt fought for the SFL Canadian middleweight championship in the co-main event. The pair engaged in an extended scramble of the year nominee, with a Brakefield eventually hitting a badass Belly to Back Souplesse.
Chase Degenhardt ended up defeating Micah Brakefield via TKO (Strikes) at 3″28 of Round 1. Warmest congratulations to both fighters for a tremendous performance.
The Super Fight League (SFL) is the first MMA promotion based in India. Events in 2015 took place worldwide, including India, Dubai, the USA, and of course Canada!
