Russian special forces, also known as SPETSNAZ, are no joke and undergo some seriously hardcore training both in armed and unarmed combat. Now compared to a modern day pro level MMA fighter, their skills in unarmed combat might fall a little short but that is to be expected.

MMA fighters specialize in unarmed combat and to get to the pro level you have to do it day in and day out. With Spetznaz units though it’s likely just a small part of their extensive curriculum.

In the following video we see what happens when members of the Russian special forces take on a huge MMA fighter and though this guy isn’t quite at the professional level he does possess some skill and is clearly very big and strong.

For the most part the big MMA guy just pretty much runs through and manhandles the entire special forces team. Once they get to the end though his luck runs out when he squares off against a little guy who’s maybe half his size. The little guy proves to be more skilled than his lumbering foe and much quicker too. Since this is from Russia it is likely that the small guy has a background in sambo of sort sort or perhaps even MMA.

He ends up reversing on the ground and nearly gets the big guy in a rear naked choke but he has some trouble finishing it as the guy’s neck is so thick. Granted this is more of a playful demonstration than an actual fight but the little guy proved here that size isn’t everything and all those big muscles can slow you down and limit mobility.

ABOUT SPETSNAZ:
Spetsnaz is an umbrella term for special forces in Russian and is used in numerous post-Soviet states.

Historically, the term referred to special military units controlled by the military intelligence service GRU (Spetsnaz GRU). It also describes special purpose units, or task forces of other ministries (such as the Ministry of Emergency Situations’ special rescue unit) in post-Soviet countries. [Source: Wiki]
