Rodriguez replaces Musaev vs. Jean at PFL Washington D.C. after weight-cut withdrawal

Preliminary card streams on the ESPN App at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. The main card airs on linear ESPN at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. The main event is scheduled for five rounds.

Shamil Musaev is off Friday’s PFL Washington D.C. card. Weight-cut complications pulled him from the vacant PFL Welterweight World Championship fight against Thad Jean less than 48 hours before the July 25 event at CareFirst Arena, per MMA Junkie’s Nolan King.

Ernesto Rodriguez, originally booked on the preliminary card against Aaron McKenzie, steps up to fill the slot. The bout will still be contested for the vacant title. Rodriguez was in Washington already, on weight, and expected to compete on Saturday. He was not.

The withdrawal

Musaev, 20-1-1, was the 2024 PFL welterweight tournament champion. He was returning from a February unanimous-decision loss to Ramazan Kuramagomedov at PFL Dubai, the only defeat on his record outside a lone draw. Kuramagomedov retired immediately after winning that fight, which vacated the belt and set up the Musaev-Jean pairing as one of the more highly anticipated non-UFC main events booked for 2026. Musaev had appeared at promotional face-offs earlier in fight week, per Yahoo Sports. The weight cut appears to have gone sideways between the face-offs and Thursday.

The Card

The Musaev pullout caps a brutal fight week for the promotion. Per Boxing News, Magomed Umalatov, Jack Cartwright, Denis Goltsov, Bruno Cappelozza, and Mando Gutierrez were all pulled from the card at various points during fight week, with Cappelozza reportedly encountering visa issues. The heavyweight bout between Cappelozza and Valentin Moldavsky has been rescheduled to PFL Charlotte in August.

Aaron McKenzie, who was scheduled to face Rodriguez on the prelims, is now without an opponent. Whether PFL finds a short-notice matchup for him or moves him off the card has not been confirmed.

Rodriguez

Rodriguez, 11-1, has been on a nine-fight winning streak that includes wins in Tuff-N-Uff, LFA, Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat, and now PFL. His promotional debut in March produced a majority decision over Masayuki Kikuiri, though observers noted he had lost the third round decisively. He trains at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas and has been wrestling since the age of six.

He accepted the fight immediately.

“I have received the greatest opportunity of my life, and I promise you I’m taking that belt home with me on Saturday night,” Rodriguez said. “This fight camp isn’t what’s prepared me for this shot. It’s been my whole life’s work.”

Rodriguez actually broke the news of the change on his own social media Wednesday night before PFL made the swap official. That is not standard promotional protocol. It also captures the compressed timeline the promotion was working under.

Jean

Jean, 11-0, arrived at the card off the strongest stretch of his career. He won the 2025 PFL Welterweight World Tournament, stopping Mukhamed Berkhamov in the opening round of the bracket, then outpointing Jason Jackson and Logan Storley to claim $500,000 and the title shot he was set to convert on Saturday. Had he beaten Musaev, he would have become the first U.S.-born PFL champion outside the seasonal tournament format.

He now gets a different fighter across the cage from him. He said the target does not change.

“My target is the same,” Jean said. “If I’m a sniper on a building and I have to change my target, I will make that change. Whoever is in front of me is getting taken down. It took a split second to change my scope, and I am ready for whatever the challenge. As soon as I got the call, I started studying Ernesto because I’m a tactician. I train 24/7 365 days a year, so when moments like these arise, I am ready.”

The switch changes the fight the corner spent a full camp preparing for. Musaev is a grinding, high-output pressure fighter with reach, an accomplished amateur base, and knockout power (three of his four wins in the 2024 tournament came inside the distance). Rodriguez is a shorter, more compact welterweight whose game runs through wrestling entries, top control, and forced scrambles. Jean prepared for a striker. He will now face a wrestler on 48 hours’ notice.

Jean has finished the majority of his professional wins. Whether that finishing rate carries against a fighter whose primary offensive path lives on the mat is the technical question the fight now asks. Rodriguez’s Xtreme Couture affiliation and his years on the wrestling mat give him a specific stylistic advantage his opponent did not spend the last several months studying.

Weight-cut withdrawals at this stage of fight week are among the more difficult scenarios for a promotion to absorb. Broadcast graphics, promotional spots, betting markets, and championship-fight billing all have to be rebuilt in under two days. PFL has not indicated whether Musaev will be rebooked or whether a disciplinary review is expected.

For Rodriguez, the math is straightforward. He goes from a preliminary bout to a title fight against an undefeated tournament winner, with the entire main-event broadcast window and a championship belt on the line. Upsets in this exact scenario, a short-notice replacement fighting up a slot, are rarer than fight-week folklore suggests, but they are not unheard of. The variable that consistently favours the replacement, when a replacement does win, is the one Rodriguez has: already in the building, already on weight, already tracking the venue. He is not walking in cold. He is walking in up a card.

Whether that translates to Saturday night is another matter entirely. Jean is the more polished fighter, the more decorated tournament graduate, and the champion the promotion has been positioning for months. Rodriguez is the fighter who said yes.

The card proceeds as scheduled on July 25 in Washington D.C., with Jean vs. Rodriguez now atop the running order.
