Put your jockstrap or jillstrap on. A nutty fight that took place at PRIDE 29 – Fists of Fire on February 20, 2005. Sandwiched between bouts featuring Mirko Filipovpíc, Mark Coleman, Quinton Jackson, Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum was a match between Aliev Makhmud (0-1-0) and Kiyoshi Tamura (32-13-3). Makhmud was making his MMA debut and came into the bout as a two-time freestyle wrestling champion from Azerbaijan, a small country situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Tamura was the popular crowd favorite from Japan and had earned victories over the likes of Patrick Smith, Valentijn Overeem, Maurice Smith, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Renzo Gracie, Jeremy Horn, Pat Miletich, and Ikuhisa Minowa.
The match starts off just like any other. However, at around the three minute mark of the bout, a rare double nutshot takes place. Makhmud takes the brunt of the shots and the referee calls a time-out. Cameras later show Makhmud face down in agony.
TV announcers Mauro Ranallo and Bas Rutten provide the colorful commentary:
Mauro: And Makhmud is being tended to right now. So, Bas, what can you tell us about what is happening here right now? How much time are they going to be giving him?
Bas: I don’t know. I think the time limit is about 5 minutes.
(Replay)
Bas: Here we go. Ohhhh!
Mauro: Oh man he caught him!
Bas: Right in the bills.
Mauro: He caught him in the peninsula, south of the equator there, Bas.
Bas: Yes, he did. For all the men, they know what this is. Girls, you don’t know, but trust me. If you don’t like your husband, kick him there. He will go down.
Could Makhmud still have children? The crowd cheers when he finds the strength to make it to a four-point base. And, after a few seconds, he motions to everyone with his arms that he is finished.
Bas: He’s going to quit.
Mauro: It’s over.
But it wasn’t over. What happened next must have seemed nuts to the 22,047 in attendance at the Saitama Super Arena and the millions watching at home. See it for yourself.
