This MMA fight from 2001 featured Minnesota-based pro-MMA fighter Sammy ‘The Squeeze’ Morgan taking on an untrained opponent named Joe Sheppard.
In Sheppard’s defense, he actually did some jogging to prepare for this fight to get his stamina up plus some weightlifting. That’s enough training to have a professional MMA fight right? Wrong.
Fighting in MMA, be it at the amateur or professional level, should be the culmination of years of consistent training under the tutelage of good coaches who know what level you at are and when you are ready to compete.
In the early days of MMA, before regulations and commissions came into being, this sort of mismatch, unfortunately, happened quite regularly.

The untrained fighter even had an amateur fight a couple months prior to this one under the same promotion, ‘Ultimate Wrestling’ based in Minnesota. He lost that one quickly in the first round and he faces the exact same fate here in this fight against Morgan because he has no training!
Morgan absolutely smokes Sheppard in this one. Tossing him around like rag doll before pounding him out just 46 seconds into the fight. Luckily the referee was quick to jump in there and stop it before the untrained fighter Sheppard took too much damage. It could have ended much worse here though for Sheppard and thanks to regulations and commissions this type of mismatch seldom happens in today’s MMA.
